Ever since her notorious performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music AwardsMiley Cyrus has become the talk of pop culture, with l’enfant terrible generating miles of headlines, outraged responses and more open letters from Sinead O’Connor than anyone can keep up with.

While pundits and artists alike have lined up to take pot shots at the young pop heroine, none less than the biggest rock star in the world has stood up and defended Cyrus’ right to twerk to her heart’s desire.

In an interview with Sky News, Sir Paul McCartney strongly supported Cyrus, saying that he’s even A-OK with his 10-year-old daughter tuning into the “Wrecking Ball” singer’s controversial performances.

“I watched it as an experiment to check, but you look at it and you say ‘what’s everyone shouting about?’” Sir Paul told Sky News presenter Charlotte Hawkins about Cyrus’ VMAs performance. “I think it was only mildly shocking … it wasn’t explicit at all,” going on to add, “Come on, we’ve seen worse than that!”

The former Beatle made the comments while promoting his new full-length album, New, which is unleashed on the world this week (Oct. 15). McCartney has been working overtime leading up to the release, most recently previewing a handful of the New tunes during a surprise lunchtime performance on the back of a semi-truck in the heart of New York City’s Times Square.
